The Department
Located in the NMR Lab-GF-Research Block, the 400 MHz Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer is an instrument that is used for the characterization of materials at the molecular level by chemists, physicists, and molecular biologists. The instrument can quantitatively analyze mixtures containing known compounds. For unknown compounds, NMR is either used to match against spectral libraries available in the literature or to conclude the basic structure directly. After knowing the basic structure, NMR can be used to study various physical properties at the molecular level such as molecular conformation, conformational exchange, and diffusion. It can also be extended as an analytical tool to study the mechanism of chemical reactions.
