Our Story

I was sent to a boarding school in 1956 and was given a Kodak Bunny 126 format camera bought from an army canteen. This point & shoot plastic body camera just had a shutter button. It was still fun shooting friends, mountains, clouds, etc. in Mussoorie. Being a strictly boarding school every moment of our days were activity filled -with studies, sports, dramatics, carpentry, art & crafts. Participation was a MUST. Our English teacher, Mr. Malan an advanced amateur used a Leica M4, started a photography club for those who owned a camera. He taught us developing of films and contact printing in trays. The world of photography was introduced to us when we saw images building up on printing paper in the tray. These were magical moments for us. The smell of hypo stuck to my fingers making me more passionate about photography. The photography club closed when Mr. Malan left school for better prospects. I kept my passion alive by hand colouring black & white postcards printed on photographic paper of landscapes, film starts and bigger prints that I got printed from commercial studios. A year before I left for Germany I was able to buy a Russian Reflex Camera - Zorky. In Germany I bought a SLR Yashika Electro X. I added lenses and a small darkroom kit. I started my processing & printing at a different level from my days at school.. A small advertisement in local newspaper by an advertising and industrial photographer, Mr. Detlev van Eupen, put me on the right track of my career. I showed my work when he came visiting. I joined him and remained till the last day of my stay in Germany. A real new world was introduced to me working in a well equipped Studio with cameras from 35mm to 8x10”, a modern lab with large 8x10” format Black & White and Colour enlargers also working with assortment of professional films and printing papers. Working alone with him was a blessing in disguise since I had to assist and also many a times handle photography on my own for the company. I spent my paid holidays as I was encouraged to join one or the other advanced workshops/summer courses in various photography colleges. Many working and freelancing photographers joined to enhance their knowledge and skills. Interacting with them was a very rich experience as we stayed in dormitories of the colleges. A single colour Heidelberg offset machine was added that helped me learn off set printing. Editor of prime newspaper was impressed by my body of street photography work. He started assigning me photography reportages of various activities during my off hours. Mr. Van Eupen gave me the freedom to use material, lab facility any time of the day or night to keep my deadlines in submitting images to the newspaper. Most prestigious assignment I personally feel was to cover visits of two former Chancellors of Germany – Mr. Willy Brandt and Helmut Kohl used on the front page of the newspaper. I have a complete studio set up of my own at 258, 1st. Floor, Shahpur Jat, New Delhi 110049. I am also available to travel for location shoots. Today with 40 years experience I am undertaking assignments - Fashion, food, products, interiors, industrial photography for advertising, catalogs, magazines. I also develop model portfolios. I give a Midas touch to your products and services. Contact me for work – 98110 15395 Email: indergopal@gmail.com Preview my work at - www.indergopalphotography.com
